Join us as we honor Doug Sorocco with the 14th annual Urban Pioneer Award

The Plaza District Association will honor Douglas Sorocco, Director and Shareholder at Dunlap Codding, as the recipient of the 2018 Urban Pioneer Award at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 14 at the Oklahoma City University School of Law, 800 N Harvey Ave.

Presented by Fowler Automotive and Oklahoma’s Credit Union, the Urban Pioneer Award is given annually to individuals in the Oklahoma City community who exemplify Oklahoma’s pioneering spirit with their leadership and commitment to urban revitalization.

"With his unique perspective and pioneering approach to developing community, Doug Sorocco has cultivated engaging public spaces, encouraged innovation and protected creativity in Oklahoma City and beyond.  We are thrilled to recognize Doug’s incredible contributions to our city by naming him the 2018 Urban Pioneer." - Shelley Rowan, Plaza District Association Board President.

A devoted volunteer to the arts and disabled populations, Doug was instrumental in the revitalization of Film Row, the impetus behind Dunlap Codding’s free community event space, and a regular dinner host to the homeless in his neighborhood.

Prior to joining Dunlap Codding, Sorocco worked at Dick & Harris, an intellectual property law firm in Chicago. He has been honored with a variety of awards, including being named one of the 15 Minority Rainmakers of the Year in 2014 by the Minority Corporate Counsel Association, The Journal Record’s 2008 “Achievers Under 40,” and the George Lewis Advocacy Award from the Oklahoma City Mayor's Committee on Disability Concerns.

"It is an honor to be able to recognize Doug Sorocco at our Urban Pioneer Awards luncheon. He has contributed so much not only to Film Row, but also to our entire community through his groundbreaking work at Dunlap Codding." – Selena Skorman, Executive Director of the Plaza District Association.

This is the fourteenth year for the award.  Tom McDaniel was the first honoree in 2005, followed by Lou Kerr (2006), Meg Salyer (2007), Mike Turpen and Mark Funke (2008), Ann Simank (2009), Steve Mason (2010), Bill and Bob Ross (2011), Wayne Coyne and Michelle Martin (2012), Chip Fudge (2013), Midtown Renaissance (2014), Heather and Keith Paul (2015), Paula Stover (2016), and Jonathan Fowler (2017).   The event is the largest fundraiser each year for the Plaza District Association.  Proceeds support ongoing neighborhood revitalization efforts.  There are five sponsorship levels for table seating, ranging from $300 (seating for two) to $5,000 (presenting sponsor, seating for eight).  Email Selena Skorman at director@plazadistrict.org for information.
